The archive at Lytham Hall covers the period from the mid 19th to 20th century. All earlier Clifton papers are housed at Lancashire Record Office, Bow Lane Preston where they can be found under Ref: DDCL.
The archive group at Lytham Hall is an independent group of volunteers who meet each week and their main aim is to improve access to the existing Clifton archive held at the Hall by compiling a new catalogue system conducive to researchers. An inventory of part of the archive held at Lytham Hall is lodged at Lancashire Records Office (LRO) and researchers can request documents/books held at the Hall for perusal at the LRO. Enquire at the LRO information desk.
The interest in genealogy has seen a marked increase in requests for information regarding family members who may have been related to or worked for the Clifton family on their Estate. The volunteers will be happy to try and answer your queries or point you to further possible lines of enquiry.
The Clifton Estate was extensive covering a large area of the Fylde and beyond and included many tenant farms and leasehold properties. There is considerable interest in the research of properties and some records are held at the Hall. The records are not catalogued and researching information is very time consuming but the group will endeavour to help those researchers who are prepared to be patient. The group has extensively researched the period of the two World Wars but also has information on individual Clifton family members.
Please, on all enquiries, try to give as much information as possible i.e. dates, full names.
Talks on the Clifton family are undertaken, at various venues for societies and interested groups, by the group’s historian.
